John Lothrop Motley was a 19th century American diplomat and writer who wrote at length about historical topics and reviews of others' writings, from the Civil War era to reviews of Honore de Balzac's fiction.

Do histories have plots? Dramatic sequences and explanations thereof, to be sure, but plots? Motley leaves the reader in no doubt as to his partisanship and tends to thump tubs in a prolix, arbitrarily-punctuated, dix-neuvième style. Leads one to look around for something parallel from the Spanish point of view. And maybe the English or German. Despite the associated frustrations, this is my second Motley book, and I'd be interested to read what he left about the Civil War on this side of the Pond.Product details

The Rise of the Dutch Republic Complete 156674 John Lothrop Motley 9781523288168 Books Reviews
My version was in three volumes, as it was originally published, 1,740 pages total. I enjoyed it very much. Almost reads like a novel, suspenseful and exciting. Of course, Motley does look upon the Prince of Orange as not a whole lot less than God, and other things may or may not be exaggerated, but on the whole, probably truthful, and very detailed. Second volume closes at the end of 1574. Knowing the geography of the country helps enormously. And Will Durant, that great historian, cites Motley in his terrific histories. Reads quickly too. How truly evil was the Duke of Alva, the tortures and killings were almost unbearable to take in. I am so very glad to have read this work. Always interesting, very readable prose style. Keep in mind, however, that this was written almost 160 years ago. I have to assume that perhaps additional facts have since come to light, although Motley's prodigious research and footnotes and original source material do make me wonder about that. And I also wonder what the Dutch themselves think of it.
Interesting all the way . Good read
Dull.
For non-fiction it kept you interested all the way through very well written and for history buff's it was awesome
I rated it low because the system never gave me the full book. There were only fragments with the download. And I never could get anyone at to straighten it out and give me the whole book. This is unusual. I usually have good luck with downloads.
Very detailed account of the final years of William of Orange, the George Washington of an independent Netherlands, and his efforts to quell the Spanish Inquisition.
